With the purpose to protect rights of the asylum seekers and persons who received international protection, Legal Aid Service and advice center for women “Sakhli” concluded memorandum of cooperation. The heads of the organizations, Meliton Benidze and Rusudan Pkhakadze signed the document.
On the basis of the memorandum, the parties will exchange information on people who have international protection, will protect them and provide with assistance, with psychological rehabilitation, will ensure prevention of violence on the basis of gender, will inform refugees about existing services and render quality free legal aid to them in cases prescribed by the law.
The asylum seekers have been granted the right to receive free advocacy service on cases regarding granting-suspension of refugee or humanitarian status since 2016. Last year, the LAS lawyers rendered free legal assistance to 187 foreigners. The most asylum seekers who receive free legal aid are from Iraq, Bangladesh, Egypt and Iran.
Advice center for women Sakhli is a non-governmental organization which has been working on domestic violence issues since 1997. With assistance of the UNHCR, Sakhli provides refugees (as well as asylum seekers) with psycho-social rehabilitation, consultations on psychiatric, medical and social issues.
