On March 24, at 11:45, at the Hilton Batumi Hotel in Batumi, with the support of the Tbilisi Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the LEPL Legal Aid Service Action Plan - "Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" will be presented.
The presentation is attended by the representatives of state and non-governmental organizations operating on the territory of Adjara Autonomous Republic, working on issues of persons with disabilities.
The Action Plan of the LEPL Legal Aid Service has been prepared in accordance with the legislative changes adopted by the Parliament of Georgia in 2020. The new Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities significantly improves the legal guarantees for persons with disabilities at the national level. The law aims at regulating the legal status of persons with disabilities, creating legal guarantees to protect their rights and freedoms, and reflecting the basic principles and values of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Georgian legislation. To do this, the law considers a number of obligations to state agencies, including the LEPL Legal Aid Service.
Within the meeting, in accordance with the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Director of the Legal Aid Service Rajden Kuprashvili will speak about the challenges facing the Legal Aid Service; the Head of the Analytical Division David Simonia will present the 2021 Action Plan.
In the discussion to be followed, the representatives of the organizations operating in the Adjara region are expected to express their views on improving the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
A similar meeting is scheduled on March 25 in Kutaisi and on March 26 in Tbilisi.
On completing the meetings, the Legal Aid Service plans to take into account the views expressed by the human rights organizations of persons with disabilities and to make appropriate changes to the action plan.
The final version of the 2021 Action Plan for Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities prepared by the LEPL Legal Aid Service will be submitted to the Parliament of Georgia
