In 2017, Legal Aid Service was actively involved in the global campaign on Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. With this, on December 21, the Parliament of Georgia approved a draft law on Making Amendments to the Law of Georgia on Legal Aid after the first hearing. After the draft law enters into force, Legal Aid Service will start providing free legal assistance to the victims of violence against women and domestic violence despite their financial situation.
On December 7, the LAS Kakheti-Sighnaghi Legal Aid Bureau lawyers – Archil Tukhashvili and Beka Javakhishvili, as well as the consultant – Giorgi Shermadini held a meeting at the Tsnori Medical and Humanitarian College.
The lawyers talked with the college students about violence against women and domestic violence, also informed them about the work of the Service, eligibility criteria for receiving free legal aid, and discussed the role of a lawyer in the protection of victims of violence against women and domestic violence. The students expressed interest toward other legal issues.
The attorneys also talked about the forms of violence and mechanisms of punishment, as well as discussed who might become a victim or a perpetrator. The organization carries out similar meetings on various topics from time to time.
